Active Learning and Design Classrooms

Active learning classrooms make it easy for students to work together. They have a variety of configurations and sizes. Many of these rooms have tables and chairs that are on wheels and can be reconfigured. If you move the furniture, though, you must return it to the standard configurations at the end of each class or event meeting.

  • Upson 102 (seats 29) and 202 (seats 28): The rooms have barrel chairs for students. These are modern tablet armchairs with large tablets that are on wheels and swivel, so students can easily turn and move to change their focus and/or their group size. This allows presentation from the front whiteboards or screens or the side white boards, small group discussions, and whole class discussions where students can turn towards the group and see the speaker. These rooms all have dual projectors and screens with independent images, document cameras, adjustable height podiums, and white boards on two walls. These rooms are also distance learning equipped.
  • Upson 142 seats 84 students at tables of 6. It has two projectors with independent images, seven short throw projectors, a document camera, and cameras to record or transmit the instructor’s presentation. The teaching station raises and lowers. Two of the walls are covered with whiteboards. Tables are fixed as they provide power for laptops and connections to the short throw projectors. The content can be mirrored into connecting rooms Upson 146 and 152 to increase capacity to 106 or 128 students.
  • Upson 146 (seats 23), 152 (seats 22), 206 (seats 48), 222 (seats 40): These rooms all have dual projectors and screens with independent images, document cameras, adjustable height podiums, white boards on three walls, and moveable tables and chairs. There are a few barrel chairs in some rooms to increase seating capacity. These rooms are also distance learning equipped.
  • Phillips 203 seats 64 students at tables of 4, and another 12 students in barrel chairs. It has two projectors with independent images, an instructor mic, and a document camera. The teaching station raises and lowers. Whiteboards cover three walls. Power is provided at tables on the perimeter of the room.
  • Hollister 314 seats 36 students at hexagonal tables. There is one projector and screen. Whiteboards cover two walls.
  • Hollister 401 seats 42 students at hexagonal tables. There is one projector and screen, one blackboard, and one whiteboard.
  • Snee 1120 (seats 48) : This room has blackboards on two walls, a main projector and screen, and a weak second projector (due to be replaced when a new one is available). The back two rows of tables are higher so students can more easily see over students in front. The rest of the tables are on wheels.

Other Rooms that Could Be Used for Active Learning

These rooms seat students at big, heavy, forward facing, tables in rows. Students face forward for lecture, but can turn sideways for group work. Unless otherwise noted, these rooms have a single projector and screen, and have blackboards.

  • Phillips 307, 403 and 407
  • Olin 245 (seats 24): These tables are fixed to the floor.
